To protect your valuable windows from the outside elements and flying debris, we offer protective covering. Depending on the application, we use the following different types of protective covering: 1/4" acrylic Optix L (Formally Lucite L), 1/4" plate glass, 1" insulated glass units, 1-5/16" Hurricane insulated glass units, and 3/16" polycarbonate Lexan.
1/4" Acrylic Optix L (Formally Lucite L)
Acrylic Optix L protective covering is a plastic. The positives are that it is strong, durable, stays clear over time, and can be used in a wide variety of applications. It is a real workhorse as a protective covering providing strength as well as insulation properties. The negative is that it is not as strong as polycarbonate Lexan. And it does not insulate as well as an insulated glass unit, but 1" round vents can be used to help alleviate condensation if necessary. It can be installed into our aluminum frames or into existing wood frames or stone openings.

1/4" Plate Glass
Plate glass is a clear, annealed glass. The positives are that it stays clear over time, and it is a little stiffer and more scratch resistant than the plastics. The negative is that it is much more likely to break, it has less insulation value than the insulated glass unit, and 1" round vents cannot be used to help alleviate condensation. It can be installed into our aluminum frame and into some wood frames and stone openings.

1" Insulated Glass Unit
An insulated glass unit is two pieces of glass sandwiched together by spacers with a vacuum between them. Different types of glass like annealed, tempered, or tempered with a low E film may be used to make the unit. The positives are that it stays clear over time, it is a little stiffer and more scratch resistant than the plastics, and it has the best insulation value. Since it insulates better than the other products, then it would be the best choice if there is a condensation problem. The negatives are that it is more likely to break (if it is annealed glass), 1" round vents cannot be used in it, and it cannot be installed into some applications. It can be installed into our aluminum frame and into some wood frames and stone openings.

1-5/16" Hurricane Insulated Glass Unit
A hurricane insulated glass unit is made of hurricane glass (two pieces of 1/4" tempered glass laminated together to a 9/16" thickness), 1/2" air space, and another 1/4" tempered glass on the outer section. This protective covering is used along coastal areas that are prone to hurricanes. The positives are the same as the insulated glass unit above, and additionally it is much stronger and resistant to flying debris. The negatives are that it is very expensive and it cannot be installed into some applications because of its thickness. It can be installed into our aluminum frame and into some wood frames and stone openings.

3/16" Polycarbonate Lexan
Polycarbonate Lexan is a plastic. The positives are that it is the strongest protective covering and it can be used in a wide variety of applications. It can be used in hurricane prone areas. The negatives are that it turns a yellow, milky, opaque color over time and it does not insulate as well as an insulated glass unit. It can be installed into our aluminum frame and into some wood frames and stone openings.
